What do all these random topics hav e in common?
These are all interests that me, or autistic loved ones, have (had).
Autistic people can get REALLY into their interests, and we can spend HOURS and HOURS talking about them, and learning about them.
Sometimes it will look like your loved one's life goes around that interest. And then, to avoid certain stuff (bad looks, not enjoying other topics) YOU WILL WANT TO STOP THE INTEREST. DON'T.
You'll see, Autistics get a lot of relaxation from engaging on those topics. It's our comfort zone, and, if we could be in a place where they talk a lot about that topic, (ex: a convention, a theme park, a factory, a scientific association, a museum, a concert, a specialized school, or the same circus/ sea)would be a paradise.
You trying to supress it will make is ANXIOUS.
You could say: "Addicts get their interests suppressed". That furthers the stigma of both stuff, which is a horse from another color. WE ULTIMATELY DO NOT HARM ANYONE WITH OUR INTREST, EVEN IF THAT INTEREST IS BDSM, WITH PROPER CAUTION AND CONSENT, IT CAN BE TOTALLY FULLFILLING. Neuro/physiotipical people do it all the time... Why not us?
Denying us accesss to our interests is ABLEIST. NTs cn talk about ehatever artist they like (Chris Brown, Eminem, the Kardashians, etc.) AND NOBODY CARES. THEY JUST CARE IF IT'S US.
GIVING US ACCESS TO OUR INTEREST IS PART OF RECKOGNIZING YOUR PRIVILEGE.
