A random fact about me: I am an amateur cosplayer.
I normally cosplay some characters:
1. Whose stories i know fairly enough to feel confident answering questions about
2. Whose color palette matches an outfit i already have or i can easily buy/make with recycled fabric (my parents have an uniform factory)
3. Who doesn't have weapons or whose weapons I can create with recycled material
4. Who has a comfortable, modest outfit (for personal reasons, which i may discuse LATER) in which it's easy to stand up or sit down (pain/ fatigue reasons #PainFromAnUnknownPlace)
5. Who doesn't cover their face (because of glasses, i'm not careful enough to wear contact lenses)
6. Whose costume can be easily taken off within 5 minutes or less.
7. Who is relatively well-known
I have gone to many Comic-Cons. And some people ACTUALLY TAKE PICTURES WITH ME!
That being said, I have to acknowledge my cosplays may not be "good enough", if we talk about the international standards...
But the thing is: FOR ME, IT'S HARD TO BE "GOOD ENOUGH". AND THIS IS THE CASE OF MANY OTHERS.
Again: I wear glasses. I am not careful enough for contact lenses. This affects me much when i cosplay masked characters. It's either the glasses, and not "looking good" or wearing the mask and not seeing anything but a giant blur of whatever color the hall wall's are. And when i use both, it's SENSORY HELL, AND IT DOESN'T LOOK GOOD. ANYWAYS, I'VE BEEN MOCKED, AT LEAST IN SOCIAL MEDIA. THIS ALSO HAPPENS WITH BRACES.
I am also on low income, and dyspraxic, and with not much free time. I can't afford making or buying "better stuff". THE SAME HAPPENS WITH OTHER DISABLED PEOPLE AND PEOPLE LIVING IN POVERTY.
MANY DISABLED PEOPLE WANT TO COSPLAY, BUT YET, THERE IS REALLY FEW DISABLED REPRESENTATION IN COMICS/ANIME/SERIES/MOVIES/BOOKS/VIDEOGAMES. SO WHEN DISABLED PEOPLE COSPLAY, THEY GET MOCKED. EVEN AUTISTIC PEOPLE LIKE ME, WHO ARE INVISIBLY DISABLED, DON'T SAY THEIR NEUROTYPE. THEY KNOW THEY ARE GONNA BE MOCKED.
I'VE SEEN HIJABI COSPLAYERS GET MOCKED ON SOCIAL MEDIA. THE SAME HAPPENS WITH COSPLAYERS OF COLOR, AND PLUS SIZED COSPLAYERS.
Genderbent cosplay is praised. WHY CAN'T ALL OF THESE COSPLAY DIVERSITIES BE PRAISED TOO?
WE SHOULD FORGET ABOUT "ACCURACY" AND START THINKING ABOUT PASSION.
